Black Label Society Show

As noted in the previous entry, we went to this show this weekend. My neck is still soar, but is was GREAT!

The venue was also great. We got to watch the show from a balcony right over the stage, off to the side a little. In fact, we had to be careful about our drinks because if they spilled, they would have spilled onto the guitars for the show. We were directly over the guitarist's parents who came to see the show. (we knew this because other vest-wearing BLS fans near us were from his home town and knew the family.) The Evil Twin (aka, guitarist) was RIGHT there -- we could see the stubble on his face. We watched the guitar tech prep each guitar and could see the set list taped up.

Directly behind us was a bar with relatively short lines and a bathroom. The people around us all became concert buddies and we'd save the place on the rail for anyone who had to leave for a few minutes to either refill their drink or relieve themselves.

We did the banging of the heads (and I know better than to bang the way I did... but did anyway). Thankfully, I banged "correctly" for most of the show, so I am only a little soar. I remember not being able to move my head for a week after a concert. Thankfully, fun doesn't have to come at a price of pain anymore. Maybe this "older and wiser" thing is kicking in??

Hubby and E are huge fans of Black Label Society. So much that they will go see them in concert several times on the same tour if they have the opportunity (once, they saw them four times in a week). I can't throw stones - and wouldn't really want to -- because I am also a fan of Godsmack. Everyone has their favorite band or singer they go gaga over.

But when does a fan cross the line into dork-dome? Is it when you travel VERY far to go see them in concert? (I am guilty). Is it when you note which songs are played in concert and in which order, so you can make a play list of the concert? (I am guilty) or is it when you take the uniform of the band you like? (I am not guilty... but hubby crossed that line)

Black Label Society leading man Zakk Wylde always wears black and some white. This isn't shocking. However, he also wears his black leather vest with various BLS patches sewn all over it. (the picture shows a denim version of the vest). He's the rock star, I would guess he rights a motorcycle... it fits his image. However, hubby and E began talking about wanting to buy "colors" (meaning he wanted a vest complete with patches.)

Mrs. E and I did not think this was the wisest fashion choice the boys could make. For a while, they decided not to get the vests. Although we felt bad for making them feel bad, the vest is bad... just bad. But alas, they are their own people and got over our hazing... They got the vests.

They are leather. They have patches. And they are horrible.

Off to the show to watch BLS rip on guitar, sing the songs and bang the head to the beat of the drum. We arrive to find many others with black leather vests on (complete with patches) and HP4EVA goes on to say that she thinks it looks cool and fully supports the vests. (She is fully aware of the saga of the vests, by the way)

Hubby and E go on to say "See...she likes the vests." and so on. In retribution, I tried to explain that she might think it is OK until her fiance puts one on. But a point was made that he is WAY to metro-sexual to think of putting it on. So... I say we get HER a black leather vest with patches. She thinks it looks so cool... she can have one. At this point, she started back stepping... It was really quite funny.

So I ask you -- where is the line to "Dorkdom" when thinking about your FAVORITE band/singer. Is there something that is too far?

Hubby will be so happy...

I wonder if a black leather vest (complete with BLS back patch) is in hubby's future?

Last night, I went to go see Black Label Society at a club downtown. It was a friggin' AWESOME show (as I expected it would be)... and to really get in the right mood, I chose to drink my favorite poison (for the time being anyway).

Normally, I don't drink much, if at all. I don't have anything against it -- I just choose not to drink most of the time. If I do have a drink... I will have one, and might not even finish it. This makes me very popular among my friends, because I am the designated, designated driver.

However, last night, a Malibu/Cranberry was calling my name. I answered. I answered a few times. (It was loud in the club, had to make sure it heard me ;) )

Thankfully, I am one of those people who don't get hangovers (go ahead, throw eggs now). I attribute it to not being able to drink enough, to get a hangover. Not being able to drink much has another added benefit, my bar bill is always the cheapest, even though I drink the expensive drinks!

Anyway -- back to the show...

Although Zakk Wilde is already famous, from his days playing with Ozzy, his band is not very well known. There is no reason why this band shouldn't be selling out nationwide stadium tours. The band is tight, the sound is hard and still clean. The "look" is age-old rock 'n roll -- ready to be put on a chopper and go for a ride into the night. Maybe it is the wrong time. Maybe it is the fact that radio plays the same 25 songs over, and over, and over, and over. Maybe those songs are on the "top 20" because there really aren't any other options to choose from?

For this genre of music, the only savior for commercial release is Headbangers Ball on MTV2, satellite radio and iPod. The old faithful underground is always the best place to find the gems. We just have to find a way to make the underground easier to find in places outside of major urban dwellings.

For now, I will sit low in my chair (to rest my tired head on the back of my chair) and keep chanting the lyrics to my favorite BLS songs in my head.

Zakk had a fabulous show, with the always eventful BLS. Hubby thinks so too... so much so, he is going to Philly and Baltimore to make sure he gets to see all BLS has to offer.
